tHE authority of christ

The arrival of Christ means that all other earthly authority is challenged. Matthew 2 demonstrates how the authority of Christ was received differently by different people. Both the Magi and Joseph recognize the authority of the newborn king and are willing to submit to him. But Herod struggles to accept Christ and uses all his power to try and stop the new king from taking his throne. His unwillingness to celebrate the arrival of Christ led to the pain of others, but the authority of Christ would prevail showing God to be sovereign over all.

summary

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

Today is the 4th Sunday of Advent. Advent means coming.
We light this candle as a symbol of the coming light of Christ.

We read in Micah 5:2:
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
from ancient times.”

Father, you sent your Son Jesus Christ to reveal your great love for the world. His power, authority and strength were not used for authoritative rule, but instead for sacrificial love. Just as Jesus’ authority as King challenged Herod, so it challenges us today. May we gladly follow the example of the Magi in welcoming the true Good Shepherd of the world, submitting our lives to the one who gave his life for us.
